The people who had disappeared didn't leave behind any ghosts. And then the spirits from before became less and less because, well, the local death rate slowed when there were fewer people to die. Besides, Harper was pretty sure that most people were happy to leave their current existence behind with things the way they were. For Harper, it was as if someone had pressed a mute button on her life. Her hectic, upside down world was suddenly empty. Ironically enough, if was bereft of the life it once had.
That had been hard.
Losing Stephen Strange had been harder.
She'd waiting for weeks inside the Sanctum, but he never returned.
For five years Harper closed herself off from the world more than ever. She cute herself off from the few people she knew who still existed. She went to work, performed her perfunctory duties, and went home. She didn't even bother with late nights in clubs and one night stands like she might have once upon a time. Losing Strange was one loss too many for a girl who had been abandoned her whole life.
In the end, it was the cats outside, in the ally behind the store. She heard the clatter of a trash can, and upon inspection found a whole pack of them digging for food in the bin. Before, maybe she'd see one stalking along the streets, but never so many at once. Not since...
Harper's hands trembled, and her heart raced as she ran to the front of the store. The streets were filled with confused people with wide eyes. People who hadn't been there in five years.
She'd finished her shift, gone home and buried herself in bed. As the hours ticked by she could hear the celebrations all around, but she wanted none of it. She couldn't dare to let herself celebrate - to hope. She couldn't do it anymore.

She turned her face and kissed the inside of his right palm, and then turned back to smile. ]
I hope you don't expect me to be this emotional all the time now. This is...well, clearly it's a special circumstance.
no subject
[Smiling at her he leaned in and kissed her softly. He didn't need to see her crying to know that underneath all her walls was a tender heart that was afraid. He knew that because he'd been there himself.]
I'm honored that you let me in this much to see that.
no subject
Just don't go telling anyone. I have a reputation to keep. [ She stole another kiss. ] Only you get to see this part of me.
no subject
Oh of course not. I'm entirely too selfish to share this side of you with anyone else.
[Just to reassure her he kissed her again, long and deep to reassure her that he wanted all of her. Every part of her was what he was in love with, he was committed to the full Harper experience.]
no subject
She nipped playfully at his bottom lip as she returned the kiss. Maybe they should move slow, but hadn't they already learned that every second was precious? That everything could change in the blink of an eye? She didn't want to be slow. ]
You can be as selfish as you want with me.
no subject
Does that mean that you'll come live with me at the Sanctum? You can keep your place here if you need to get away sometimes but... I don't want to be without you if I don't have to.
no subject
Yes. If you want me there, I'm there.
[ She didn't let herself second guess her answer. The last five years in that apartment had been a lifeless sort of purgatory. She wouldn't be sad to see it go. And though the last thing she wanted to be was clingy, she found that the idea of being near Strange only a near daily basis was the most appealing thing she had heard in a long, long time. ]
no subject
I do. I want you there with me because despite everything in it it won't feel complete if you're not there.
no subject
You should try it for five years.
[ Her voice was muffled, and despite the bitter meaning, she sounded like she was teasing. And she was. She wouldn't wish the five empty years she had endured on anyone, least of all Stephen. ]
I want to be wherever you are.
no subject
Mmm, I don’t think so. I think I don’t even want to go five days without you.
[Of course it was entirely possible that they might be separated from each other for that long at some point but he hoped not. He hoped that they’d be there for each other every day, regardless of what they were going through.]
You’ve gone and ingrained yourself in ways that it feels like you’re the best parts of me so you’re stuck with me for the long haul.
no subject
I want to be stuck. Truth is I've always wanted to be stuck, but I was too scared. Too stupid.
no subject
[That sounded rather permanent but Strange wanted it to, wanted to put it out into the universe that they were together now. A unit. There was a strange mixture of vulnerability and strength that came with that he found solace in.]
no subject
Can we go now? I want to. I just...I don't have the best memories here anymore.
no subject
[Strange quirked an eyebrow at her before he couldn't help but grin. He also did notice the blush on her face but was wise enough not to comment on it just yet.]
Of course we can, I am a master of the mystic arts afterall.
[Slipping on his sling ring Strange conjured a gate and then passed it over them while they were laying on the bed and in an instant they were back in the Sanctum, lying in the bed there.]
no subject
You really love throwing that title around, don't you?
no subject
It's a very good title. I'd be willing to look into something different though.
[Strange smiled and rolled over so that he was on top of her, looking down. She was so beautiful that he couldn't stop just staring at her. It seemed unfair to say it considering all that had just happened but he really was a lucky man.]
How about boyfriend? It's absolutely ridiculous but I'll be amused every time you say it.
no subject
She returned his smile with one of her own. She reached up to his face with both hands and buried her fingers in his hair. So close now, it took little effort to lean up and kiss him, soft and sweet, but teasing at more. ]
My boyfriend, Stephen Strange. Has a nice ring to it.
no subject
Especially if you put the emphasis on the "my".
[That was what he liked. She could call him whatever she wanted so long as it was hers and he would be happy. That was the important part to him, the part that really mattered and made him feel complete. It was a scary thing to admit, that you weren't fully you without someone else but he knew that was the reality of it and to pretend any different was just ridiculous.]
no subject
[ She continued to smile, glad that they were on the same page. He was hers and she was his. In the end something that she feared so much had become astoundingly clear
She looked at him with a mischievous glint to her eyes. She kissed his cheek. ]
Mine.
[ Then his other cheek. ]
Mine. [ The tip of his nose. ]
Mine. [ She all but growled the last one before tugging at his collar and bringing his lips down to hers in a heated, hungry kiss. ]
no subject
[The kisses on his cheek and nose were sweet in the way that she didn't let anyone but him see and it made him smile. He liked when she could feel free to be silly or sweet like that.
The last time she said it, growling it so possessively before she kissed him was anything but sweet but oh so good all the same. Strange liked the possessiveness, the way he could feel that she needed and wanted him in a way that sent heat flushing through his body.]
no subject
When she parted her lips from his though, there was a subtle quiver there - the lone remnant of the fear she had held inside of her for so long. ]
I haven't...with anyone else. Not since you left.
[ She had tried though. Tried to use her old faithful tactic of forgetting. But whenever she had gotten close to taking someone home she had thought of Strange and hadn't been able to continue. ]
no subject
Well, I haven't either and if I can say so going a few days without you is hell.
[He kissed her again, this time more heatedly, wanting to reassure her that he needed her just as badly as ever.]
Let me start making it up to you?
no subject
Please. [ Her lips quirked in a small smile. ] You'd better get started. You've got five years to make up for, after all.
no subject
I hope you're prepared to be lavished with all sorts of attention for quite some time.
[Strange kissed her again and then pulled back, standing up so that he could begin to pull his clothes off. It took him a bit, bruised and sore as it was, but before long he was completely naked and already hard for her. Harper never failed to get him excited.]
no subject
A mix of desire and concerned welled up in her, and if that didn't constitute as love, she didn't know what did.
She reached out and ran her fingers gingerly over a prominent bruise on Strange's chest. Her eyes roamed his body, taking in every spot of damage and silently promised to lavish him with her own attention soon enough. ]
For all the times I've fantasized about you when you were gone...well, I'm more than ready.
