about
Harper works as the manager at a popular convenience store chain. Not her ideal job, but it pays the bills. Her real work involves the dead. She mediates on behalf of spirits who are unable to move on. She lives a relatively solitary life due to her past, and tells herself she's content with that. When she manages some free time she enjoys a good bingewatch on Netflix. Her current fave is Terrace House. She keeps active, as angry spirits have a habit of making things physical. She takes morning runs and goes swimming at the local YMCA when she can.
personality
Harper has put up a lot of walls over the years. She relies heavily on sarcasm when she interacts with people, and can be pretty short with them. She isn't inherently nasty to people, but she doesn't go out of her way to be kind and get attached. She has a short temper, and often gets worked up if someone or something is bothering her. This often happens with the spirits she deals with. Underneath her gruff exterior, Harper is a pretty big softy. She especially cares for kids, though she isn't likely to let it show. Her own childhood was a mess and she doesn't want other children to go through things like she did. There's an insecure part of Harper that she's worked very hard to bury. It would take quite a lot for that to come out anywhere other than the privacy of her own apartment. She thinks that she's inadequate, despite being a hard worker. Years of rejection in the foster care system left her disillusioned that anyone could care about her, and so she doesn't try to make connections. Above all though, she doesn't want anyone to consider her weak. She hides her vulnerabilities and doesn't let people in. She has many acquaintances, but none she's ever considered a friend. It's a lonely life, but she's made it work so far.
history
Harper was born to a single mother who did her best to take care of her with the aid of Harper's grandmother, Lucie. Her mother passed in a car accident shortly after her first birthday. Lucie took full custody of Harper, but suffered a heart attack with Harper was five and passed away. Harper was brought into foster care shortly after. Unbeknownst to Harper, Lucie's spirit remained. Her final wish was to keep taking care of Harper, and while Lucie's spirit passed on she left a portion of herself behind. Though she does not know the cause, Harper suddenly acquired supernatural abilities. She could see, hear and speak to ghosts. Her newfound abilities attracted many spirits to come and seek her aid in moving on. Her abilities overwhelmed her as a child and was closely watched by a psychiatrist. She was prescribed medications to deal with her "delusions", but it did no good. Eventually she learned on her own how to deal with her abilities, and the doctors stepped back. However, the damage was done. She closed herself off from people, keeping to herself, not trusting others with her secret. All of her troubles left Harper as an unlikely candidate for adoption. She was handed off from one home to another until she simply aged out of the system. No one wanted to deal with Harper issues when she was younger or her attitude when she grew older. After leave foster care Harper started working in retail and eventually worked up the ranks at a local convenience store. She has never come to understand the reasons for her powers, but has honed them so that she can both use them, and also pass as an ordinary human.
