[ Harper had been in the middle of a fitful sleep when the knocking woke her. She stayed, rigid in her place under the covers. She could feel the quick thrum of her pulse in her ears as her mind began to clear. Had she really heard the knocking? Or had it been some sleep-induced hallucination? But then the knock came again, and she had to admit to the reality.

And to to dread.

There was only one person that ever visited her at home, and that person hadn't visited in five years. She knew. She knew that it wasn't his fault. The news of The Avenger's loss had gotten around eventually, and Harper had been able to do the math. It wasn't fair though. It wasn't fair for her to lose him on top of everyone else, and it wasn't fair that he was there now, just beyond her apartment door.

She didn't know if she was more frightened of facing him, or for letting him leave. The possibilities circled in her mind until it felt like her skull was going to crack open.

Finally, in a fit of frustration, she thrust herself out of bed. With a blanket draped over her shoulders, Harper marched to the door before she could second guess the decision. She forced the locks, each click a punctuation of her roiling emotions. Then with all the power she could muster, she pulled the door open. ]
